12 days to go!

August 29, 2008 Leigh 2 comments

I write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE) in 12 days.  Just thinking about it makes my stomach turn.  I am so incredibly nervous, and I’m terrified that I will blank out because of it.  I actually booked the next week and a half off of work so I can just focus on studying.

I think I can I think I can I think I can…

Ravelympics FOs!

August 23, 2008 Leigh 5 comments

The Ravelympics have been a lot of fun.  I entered some of my unfinished projects for WIPs Wrestling (Go Team Canada!) and it feels great to have a few things done and out of the way.  First up, some dishcloths that have been lurking since March:

They’re super!  I finished these fairly quickly and gave them away the next day.  Next up, my Jayne Cobb Hat:

Don’t recognize it?  Then get thee to a video store!  Inspired by Jayne’s hat in Firefly, this thing is a little rough around the edges, but very warm.  I had a hell of a time getting gauge, and eventually gave up and just cast on an extra 20 stitches.  I think it turned out pretty good though.  Just looking at it makes ‘The Hero of Canton’ pop in my head…

JAYNE!
The Man they call Jayne!

Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain’t hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call JAYNE!

Apple actually cares!

I just gotta say how much I love Apple.  I have had to see a genius about my MacBook twice this summer and both experiences have been fantastic.  When my hard drive died in June, they swapped it out right in front of me and I didn’t have to pay a cent (I love Apple Care!).  Today I went in for more cosmetic reasons.  The wrist rest area on my notebook had developed cracks, apparently a common defect.  The genius who helped me said it would be an easy fix, but I would lose my computer for several days.  My nursing exam is in two weeks and I need my computer right now.  I explained that to her, and she offered to swap it out right away!  How cool is that?  Twenty minutes and a coffee and bagel later, my computer has a new keyboard/wrist rest/trackpad.  It looks new again!  I will never go back to a PC…

Knitting and baseball and rain, oh my!

So, mom and I attended the second annual Blue Jays Stitch ‘n Pitch, a baseball game devoted to the fiber arts.  What a night – I’m glad I can laugh about it now.  Mom and I decided to take the train into the city, rather than pay for parking downtown.  Bad idea.  It started to rain on the way, but we didn’t really think much of it; we were told that our stop would come out really close to the stadium.  By the time we arrived, Noah’s flood was in full swing, and although close, our stop was still a fair distance from our gate entrance.  We decided to make a run for it, but ended up taking shelter under the canopy of a food vendor with a couple Jays fans and a cop.  The cop asked mom if he could ‘commandeer’ her jacket – funny.  Really.

A second sprint had us running into the first available open door – the gift shop.  Where apparently there is no entrance into the actual stadium.  By this point we are absolutely soaked, I’m talking gone for a swim soaked and we were desperate.  Two $5 Fifa 2006 France t-shirts and two umbrellas later, we were making a run through the rain again.

The game itself was rather dull in comparison.  Amy Singer (of Knitty fame) threw the first pitch and our Stitch ‘n Pitch section was packed with knitters, while the rest of the stadium looked sad and empty.  Other than my new crappy t-shirt, I was still soggy by the time we left.  I’m thinking of doing it again next year…

Baby knitting is fun!

New FOs!

…And already delivered to their new owner.  My cousin just had baby number 4 and I knit her a bunch of little things.  The latest was a hat and a pair of adorable booties.

I kind of went hat crazy.

I love knitting baby things.  Next up, finish the pink and grey wrist warmers for BigSis!
