Earth Hour.

So, Earth Hour was today.  I did the best I could to participate; I turned out my lights and ran my laptop off the battery.  Living with the parentals meant that the whole house wasn’t dark, but oh well.  Dad was watching the Nelly Furtado Earth Hour concert on television and I couldn’t help but appreciate the irony.  Here was a concert that the city painstakingly planned to be as energy friendly as possible and yet they were televising it.  If everyone is participating in Earth Hour, who is supposed to be watching?

Knitting is funny that way.

I’ve finally started my Jayne Cobb hat but I seem to be having some trouble.  I can’t seem to get gauge for some reason.  I bought the right yarn and the right needle size, but I’m getting 4 stitches per inch instead of 3.  So I doubled the yarn, but I’m still not getting it!  I swear, sometimes knitting defies the laws of physics.  I’m tempted to just keep going and see how big this thing turns out.

I found it!

I finally found the right yarn!  I visited BigSis downtown yesterday and decided to check out Romni Wools.  Just getting there was a bit of an adventure.  BigSis drew me a map and explained how to ride the streetcar.  Don’t laugh – public transportation is a bit foreign to me!  I got off at the right stop, but I ended up walking down the street in the wrong direction.  Oops.  I finally figured out which way to go and I just barely made it in the store before they closed.  That store has the most fantastic collection of yarn.  I wish I had more time, although if I were there any longer my credit card would probably start to wail.  The trip back was a bit more interesting.  I got on the right streetcar, but the driver was returning to the station so I had to get off.  He gave me a transfer (like I know how to use that!) but I figured I would just walk.  I passed by this one storefront with real women dancing in the display windows.  In their underwear.  I really don’t want to know what they were trying to sell, but I do wish I had asked them if they were cold.  I mean, the city is still covered in snow.  I wonder if storefront window displays are heated?

A fruitless hunt…

I have a special knitting project that I am dying to do, although it’s starting to feel cursed. I’m trying to make a Jayne Cobb Hat. Unless you are a fan of Firefly, you probably don’t know what it is. Basically, it’s an orange toque. With earflaps. It’s pretty hideous, but I want to make it, and dammit, I plan on wearing it too! My problem is finding the right yarn. I found a great pattern online but the specific gauge it’s asking for seems pretty rare around here. So, I figured I would just double up some worsted weight – simple, right? Except I can’t seem to even find worsted weight in the right colours! Totally cursed. My last resort is checking out this great yarn store downtown, but I’m not a fan of driving in the city so I’m trying to avoid it. I have never had this much knitting related trouble before…
