Today LittleSis turns 19, and she’s coming home for a bit of a long weekend. 19 years – wow. I remember her being this chubby cheeked little kid who loved to sing…

Uncertain.

I am really enjoying my home care placement. D (my preceptor) is easy to talk to, which is pretty vital when you’re stuck in car all day together. I’ve considered asking her if I could do my pre-grad with her, but I’m not sure if I would get enough hours; the workload fluctuates from day to day. I’m still really uncertain about what part of nursing I want to focus on; I’ve been in a nursing home, a hospital and now home care, and they all seem to have their pros and cons. I was thinking about getting an OR certificate, but one of my teachers has told me some pretty brutal stories about her experience in a surgical rotation; apparently some of the doctors can be really cruel to the nurses. I just don’t know…

First day jitters.

Today was the first day of my community-based nursing placement. And before it actually started I was more than a little terrified. Why? Because this is the first time I’ll be in a placement without a teacher and classmates. I’m all alone, with just a nursing preceptor to monitor my progress. That feels kind of scary, although my experience today eased some of my fears. I’ve been assigned home care; basically, I drive around with my preceptor and provide nursing care in people’s homes (duh). Today was a bit unique though – my preceptor had the day off so I had a substitute – a recent graduate from my school! That was nice; we had a bit in common to talk about. I already feel like I’m learning something; the clients we saw today required specific care that I have yet to practice, and I’m quite excited to get some hands-on experience. Tomorrow I meet my actual preceptor; I’m a bit nervous still (I want to make a good impression). I hope it goes well!

Happy New Year!

Our family has a New Year’s tradition/superstition; something that my dad has done for eons.  After midnight, a man has to be the first person to enter the house, and he must do it with his right foot first.  This is supposed to bring good luck to the house, and I guess everyone in it.  So, last night shortly after midnight, dad went outside and reentered with his right foot first.  Does it work?  I hope so – we could always use some good luck!
